החומט כחול-הלשון הוא לטאה גדולה ומרשימה ממשפחת החומטיים, המאופיינת בגוף גלילי וחסון, ראש רחב ומשולש, רגליים קצרות מאוד וקשקשים חלקים ומבריקים בדפוס פסים רוחביים, לצד לשון בולטת בצבע כחול-קובלט עז המשמשת להרתעת טורפים. מין זה מאכלס יערות פתוחים, חורשים ואזורי שיחים באוסטרליה ובאיים סמוכים (וכן מסתגל היטב לסביבת האדם), שבהם הוא פעיל בשעות היום בחיפוש קרקעי אחר מזון. התזונה שלו אופורטוניסטית ואומניבורית, וכוללת מגוון חרקים, שבלולים וחלזונות שהוא מפצח בקלות בלסתותיו החזקות, לצד חומר צמחי ופירות. למרות מזגו השקט והיותו פופולרי מאוד בקרב חובבי זוחלים, הוא ידוע כיצור שאינו מטיל ביצים אלא משריץ צאצאים חיים ומפותחים.

The blue-tongued skink is a large and impressive lizard belonging to the skink family, characterized by a robust and cylindrical body, a broad triangular head, very short legs, smooth and shiny scales with a banded pattern, and a prominent bright cobalt-blue tongue used to deter predators. This species inhabits open forests, woodlands, and shrublands in Australia and nearby islands (while also well-adapted to human-modified environments), where it is active during the day foraging on the ground. Its diet is opportunistic and omnivorous, consisting of a variety of insects, slugs, and snails which it easily cracks with its powerful jaws, alongside plant matter and fruit. Despite its calm temperament and great popularity among reptile enthusiasts, it is known for giving birth to live, fully developed young rather than laying eggs.
