The course language is English.
The course will introduce optical quantitative and qualitative flow visualization using PIV and its extensions (towards 4D), as a research tool to study the physical interaction between animals and their surrounding medium (air and water). It will serve as an introductory level course for undergraduate and graduate biology students who are first time users of PIV and have little background in fluid dynamics. Special focus will be given to applications of the PIV technique and obtaining hands-on experience in analyzing flow structures, forces and energetics from experimentally measured flow fields. Course content will include (but is not limited to):
- Optical flow measurement techniques concepts
- Basic concepts in fluid mechanics
- PIV principles: non-intrusive imaging technique
- PIV extensions: momentum and mass transport
- Flows behind flying and swimming animals
- Planning and carrying out PIV experiments on animals
Interpreting flow structures, forces and energetics from PIV data
Schedule: 1st semester, November 24th to December 22th, 2019.
Grade: 50% Final exam and 50% Research project.
